They have played an important role in developing Indian thought and tradition.

There are four main Vedas:

Rigveda – contains hymns and prayers.

Samaveda – mainly deals with melodies and chanting.

Yajurveda – explains rituals and sacrifices.

Atharvaveda – contains knowledge related to daily life, health and society.

3. Role of Vedas in IKS

1. Foundation of Knowledge:

The Vedas are considered an important foundation of Indian knowledge. They contain ideas related to philosophy, religion, language, music, medicine and other areas of knowledge.

2. Preservation of Knowledge:

Vedic knowledge was traditionally passed from teacher to student through oral tradition. Special methods of pronunciation and chanting helped preserve the texts accurately for thousands of years.

3. Development of Vedangas:

To understand and preserve the Vedas, six important auxiliary disciplines called Vedangas were developed:

Shiksha – Phonetics

Kalpa – Rituals

Vyakarana – Grammar

Nirukta – Etymology

Chandas – Metrics

Jyotisha – Astronomy

These disciplines also contributed to the development of Indian academic knowledge.

4. Philosophical and Ethical Ideas:

The Vedic tradition gave importance to values such as Dharma, Karma, Atman and Brahman. These ideas became important parts of Indian philosophy and influenced Indian culture and way of life.

5. Contribution to Literature and Aesthetics:

The Vedic hymns contain beautiful language, rhythm, metaphors and symbolism. They helped create an early foundation for Indian poetry, literature and aesthetics.

4. Conclusion
